What Is Freshmen Academy?

The transition to high school is a challenging time for freshmen. Students must quickly adapt to a school environment that is quite different from what they were accustomed to in middle school. Among the many challenges they face include increased responsibilities, more freedom and independence, and a new social setting. Columbia High School's Freshmen Academy is an alternative program designed to minimize these challenges and make the transition to high school a smooth one. The program includes smaller class sizes, increased guidance and counseling support, close supervision by the building principal, and frequent parent contact. In addition, the program includes teachers who have been selected because of their ability to work with struggling students.
Students are selected for Freshmen Academy in the spring of their eighth grade school year based on referrals from guidance counselors and teachers and requests from parents. Students may also enter the program during their ninth grade year if they are struggling. Student participation in Freshmen Academy is voluntary.
